If you have taken a class with me, whether it was the Initial Certification, or a CEU, you probably heard me stress the importance of hydration. Sometimes, getting our residents to stay hydrated seems IMPOSSIBLE! Well, there's some tips and tricks that we can use to make hydration a little more exciting. One of the videos I share in my classes is the infused water video, remember this one? (click on picture for video)
Have you tried flavor infused water in your facility? Has it helped with getting and keeping your residents hydrated?
I like having a couple different options, and in my facilities we would have these in an easily accessible place so that the residents, staff, visitors, anyone coming in can grab a drink anytime they like. If you use a clear dispenser, like the one pictured here, it naturally draws people to try it because of the fun colors and anticipation and sometimes intrigue of what it might taste like. Change up the flavors daily to keep up the interest. I like this option that comes with a stand to make it easy to pour into a cup or tumbler.
Speaking of tumblers... Recently, I had a student share a fun tip with me. She runs a medium-sized facility and does welcome baskets for all her new residents. One of the items she includes is a personalized tumbler with the residents name and some fun designs to really personalize the cups.
Now, she is really creative and has a talent for arts and crafts, so she uses her Cricut to make these personalized labels, but if you are not as crafty, you can use the stickers that come with them, or have your residents use sharpies to decorate their own. Makes for a fun activity too!
Another trick that I have found to make water fun, is similar to the infused waters, but with a little more flavor. I LOVE making fresh juice, and I have played around with a bunch of different fruit and veggies to see what combinations taste the best, but a lot of these are very "strong" in their flavor, so I like adding some water to help dilute them. Well, even a little MORE water can be used for our residents. Try my recent favorite - beets, carrots, apple, and pineapple. It has a great fun pink color and the pineapple really adds that sweetness. Try the juicer pictured here, it has 4.2 stars and is currently on super sale.
If you are a fan of brand names, my tried and trusted is NutriBullet. I've owned their products in the past and can say with great confidence, never ran into any issues. This one has 4.0 stars (but less reviews) on Amazon. Both of these are cold press, or slow masticating juicers, which is what you'd want to look for, as opposed to centrifugal juicers which heat up the juice resulting in a loss of some of the vitamins.
