BUGS! Effective pest control options

Oh boy, time flies when you're having fun, I realized its been almost a month since I posted last! I was teaching a live class today and realized theres an important topic I haven't made a blog post about yet. Pest control!

In our Title 22 for RCFE's, we must ensure that our facilities are free of pests. So.... how exactly do we do that? Well, keeping our facility clean is a great start, but sometimes we need to go above and beyond. Of course we will need a good pest control company to come out and do regular visits. How about in between those regular visits? Like when we get that annoying trail of ants because a resident spilled some cranberry juice and didn't let us know so we clean it up? Well, I have a solution for you!

This is a product that i personally use in my home, and have been for years. Its the same stuff that professional pest control companies use, but at a fraction of the cost! I know, at over $100 for only 13.5oz you may be asking wheres the deal in that? Well... you only use a tiny little amount of this stuff diluted with water. Last time i bought a bottle of this was way back in spring of 2020 and i do my pest control spraying around the entire perimeter of my house every 3 months, and sometimes more in the spring and summer when the icky things starts showing up, and I still have more than half a bottle left. I also like to keep a small amount in a small spray bottle for those annoying touch ups when the any army inevitably invades during the summer months. You may be wondering how safe this stuff is if its used by the big companies? Well, as a very talkative big pest control professional told me, its very safe. As soon as it dries, you can let your kids and pets back into the area safely. Oh, and it dries in minutes! Keep in mind, this is made for TINY little insects, the amount we're spraying may be enough to irritate skin, so wash your hands if you come into contact, but otherwise you have nothing to worry about. Of course, this is a pesticide, so keep this locked up and away from your residents.

So how do you use this? See the little part on the top left of that Temprid bottle? You squeeze the bottle to fill that part up, half way for a gallon of water, more for a larger amount, and mix it up with plain ol' tap water from the garden hose. I like to use a large garden sprayer for this as seen to your left. You will want to close the top tightly and give a few swirls to make sure it gets all nice and mixed up. Then use the top handle to pump and get some pressure in there and then just spray away! I like to set the nozzle on a light mist and kind of go back and forth about 6-12 inches from the house out to get that nice border. But.... most of us will use that professional company for those "big" jobs, so lets talk about the touch ups.

Here's some of those small spray bottles that I have at home. I like that they are dark colored glass, which I don't know if it has any effect on the product or not, but has been working for me. I don't really have exact measurements so I can't give too detailed of advice, but I put maybe a few drops, maybe closer to like 10 drops, and fill the rest of the bottle with tap water. It just takes a few quick sprays to exterminate those already inside, and prevent those pesky unwanted guests from coming in.
